Sure, this depiction of a Doctor gazing adoringly upon her favorite autoclave is a bit over the top, but it's not so far-fetched. A sterilizer or autoclave going down can literally grind your practice to a standstill.
The question must be asked; what could you have done differently? Short of the added expense and lost counter space of buying a redundant autoclave, there's very little you could do differently, as long as the proper preventive maintenance regimens were followed.
Errr, the preventive maintenance regimens WERE followed, weren't they? Surely, one member of the staff was designated to perform the cleanings and the standard preventive maintenance measures, right?
What a feeling. But it may not be your fault. That's right. It may not be your fault.
The truth is, when most of the larger supply houses deliver your brand-new sterilizer or autoclave, all they do is set it up and plug it in, and leave. Sadly, In-Service (teaching customers and staff how to operate and maintain their new and very expensive piece of equipment) has become a thing of the past. Inexperienced service/install technicians who simply don't know how to operate the equipment are becoming more and more common these days. And you, the customer, will all too often pay the price for this.
The good news is that taking care of most autoclaves isn't difficult. Like most things, you can expect a return on the time and effort you put into the relationship. This Care and Feeding section is named tongue-in-cheek, but we're serious about providing you with lots of helpful tips for the "Care and Feeding" of your autoclaves, no matter what model you have in your office. Like people, autoclaves and sterilizers have their own personalities, and quirks common to each model. Knowing those quirks is often the key to maintaining them properly, learning what to do to, and just as importantly, what NOT to do. Your autoclave will thank you, and it never hurts to save yourself some money and reduce the frequency of service calls.
